Common Types Of Welding Process
Welding Process Types
This article covers the most common types of welding. It doesn’t cover all welding types but you’ll find it covers the major welding procedures:
Arc welding is a process which uses a welding power supply to create an electrical circuit; this circuit generate heat that in turn will create an electric arc (the arc is formed between an electrode rod and the base metal being welded; the electrode rod is moved along the joint and is melted by the arc); this arc is used to melt two pieces of metals at the welding point to fuse them together. The welding power supply used to generate the current may be either a constant current power supply or a constant voltage power supply (the voltage level is directly related to the level of the arc, and the current is directly related to the amount of heat input); the type of welding current (which in turn creates the electric arc) may be either direct (DC) or alternating (AC) current. Arc welding is one of the most common types of welding forms today; other types of arc welding are shielded metal arc welding, which is also called manual arc welding or stick welding, flux cored arc welding, submerged arc welding, plasma arc welding, shielded metal arc welding, submerged arc welding, carbon arc welding, and stud arc welding.
Mig welding, or metal inert gas welding, is a type of welding or process in which a spool of solid steel spun wire is fed from the welding machine; this wire is used to generate the electric the wire is pushed out of a mig gun and is melted in this process, joining together with the base metal to create the weld puddle. The gun also produces the inert gas (helium and argon) flow, which it shoots out as well; since the surrounding air atmosphere is made up of hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen, these inert gases shield the weld puddle from the atmosphere.
Mig is one of the most common types of welding procedure.
Carbon dioxide, although not an inert gas, also works to shield the weld puddle from the atmosphere; although this is technically referred to as gas metal arc welding, it is also considered to be a mig welding. Mig welding can be applied to a wide variety of metals, including steel and aluminum, and makes welding of thinner metals easier; however, it is best used indoors in shops, factories, and indoor construction sites, since wind displaces the shielding gas, and is not suitable for thick steel metal. There are two types of mig welding, conventional and pulsed mig welding; conventional mig welding uses a constant voltage DC power source and provides a lower amount of heat Input, while pulsed mig welding uses periodic pulses of current.
Tig welding, or gas tungsten arc welding, is one of the types of welding that is harder than mig or arc welding. Buti it is a welding process in which an arc is formed between a non-consumable tungsten electrode and the metal being welded; gas (argon, hydrogen, or helium) is fed through a torch to shield the electrode and to protect the weld puddle from the atmosphere and any airborne contaminants. Filler wire may be used and added to the weld pool separately. This particular type of welding process produces one of the most cleanest, high quality welds, has the most precise control, is free of splatter, has low distortion, and welds more metals than any other process; there is also no smoke or fumes, no flux or slag, and can be applied in all positions (horizontal, vertical, flat, or overhead).
Plastic welding is not one of the most common types of welding for regular welding jobs. But it is used in the industrial sector quite a bit. It is a process which welds plastic materials together; however, since welded plastic components are less strong and stable than their metal counterparts, plastic welding is used only in cases where it is difficult to repair or get the replacement part. Plastic welding may be done with a hot gas welding process, which uses hot air directed onto the plastic being welded, melting them to a liquid form which are then joined together, or a contact gas welding process, which uses two pincer-like contact rails to provide the heat source, and in turn melt the plastics.
Laser welding uses an optical source, or laser beam as the heat source to weld materials; this laser beam may be either conventional or fiber optic beams. It’s a specialized type of welding that requires different training the regular welding procedures like MIG, ARC, and TIG.
