History, Abbreviation of Standard and Code

The growing use of boiler in the late 1700s led to the need for regulation which would safeguard the public from catastrophic boiler failures. Most of the earlier explosions resulted in the loss of life of one or two persons and a number of injuries. More disastrous boiler explosions have occurred on occasion , such as on the steamboat SULTANA on the Mississippi river on April 27, 1865 have accident in the loss of 1500 lives, and then at Henry Clay Mine in Shamokin, Pennsylvania have a loss 1000 lives. At march 20, 1905 boiler explosion occurred in a shoe factory in Brockton, Massachusetts, killing 58 persons and injuries 117 persons. In 1907 Massachusetts adopted the first known legal code of rules for construction of Boiler and 1908 Ohio adopted also the rule. To resolve any conflicts and prevent future disasters, in 1911 were issued to the council of the ASME and in 1913, the committee issued the first preliminary report to 2000 mechanical engineers, professionals and insurance inspectors and than in 1914 was issued the section I of ASME Code.
