Tig Welder Torch Guide and Advice

Tig Welder Torch Basics: Tig welding is a semi-automatic welding process like mig welding, but unlike mig welding and many other types of welding the Tig welder has the most advanced welding torches. The Tig welding gun has the ability to semi-automate the welding process through the clever use of water, gas, metal and electricity.

Today you are going to find out what a Tig torch is and how the Tig welder torch allows its user to safely combine water, metal, gas and electricity to supply a strong weld.

What is a Tig torch?

A Tig welder torch is the handle and nozzle found at the end of the cable running from a Tig welder. The torch is made up of a short hose that feeds through a handle and into the torch head. The torch head runs at an almost right angle to the handle and houses the nozzle. The nozzle is where the weld takes place as the tungsten filler, shielding gas and electricity combine to create the right atmosphere for a weld to occur.

How does the Tig torch work?

The Tig welder torch works by its unique design inside. Inside the long shaft and handle there are three hoses and a cable. One of the hoses enters underneath the torch and is the water inlet hose, the other two hoses travel through the main shaft of the torch, one of these carries the shielding gas Argon while the other is the outlet hose for the water.

The cable travels through the shaft and handle of the torch and is used to feed the Tungsten electrode through the torch and out of the nozzle at the end.

The welding torch is bought down to the material being worked, the Tungsten electrode that comes from the nozzle will then form an arc through the power of the electrical current carried through the torch.

While the welding takes place the torch feeds shielding gas into the world area to ensure no atmospheric gases can disrupt and affect the weld.

As the Tig torch works at extremely hot temperatures because of the arc produced, the torch uses water to keep the torch and power cable cool throughout the process.

Summary

A Tig torch is a great and important piece of equipment that should be well maintained to get the most out of it, if it is kept clean and looked after you are sure to get the most out of your welding.
